EC's bank raises its profile

Article Abstract:

The EC Edinburgh Summit gave the European Investment Bank a temporary lending facility of 4 billion pounds sterling for infrastructure projects and the European Investment Fund (EIF) to provide guarantees for projects. The European Investment Bank implements financial aspects of EC foreign policy. Its activities increased in 1993 when it lent about 20 billion ecus compared to 6 billion ecus in 1983. Sir Brian Unwin, then head of Customs and Excise, was concerned that the extra activity should not dilute lending quality.

They'll have to do it Ray's way

Article Abstract:

Ray MacSharry, European Agriculture Commissioner, is standing firm in the GATT talks to bring them in line with his new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the European Community. Mr MacSharry was brought into his post in 1989 to sort out the crisis in CAP and his ideas of greatly reduced subsidies and incentives to change land use will be brought in this year. If MacSharry does not change GATT policy it would undo his CAP work. However he is unlikely to change his stance on agricultural policy.

Simenon would have loved it

Article Abstract:

Investigations in Belgium into the murder of politician Andre Cools in 1991 have started to implicate a number of leading figures, including Nato secretary-general Willy Claes. Allegations of corruption are now being made which are causing embarrassment both to Claes and to Nato as a whole. Against this background, Claes should ensure that the whole truth about his activities is made known as soon as possible.
