EMU depends on strong political links

Article Abstract:

The main obstacle to the successful implementation of European monetary union is the need for extensive policy coordination, according to Alexandre Lamflussy, the Belgian banker who is responsible for preparing Europe for the single currency. It is vital to strive towards wider economic and political cooperation, and this will prove a considerable challenge. He believes that it will be necessary to have explicit coordination of fiscal policies, going further than the harmonisation of taxes which is already taking place.

Spend, spend, spend in the land of plenty

Article Abstract:

The US economy has grown strongly since the early 1990s, but more and more economists are now predicting that growth will slow down. This is because consumer spending is currently very high and will eventually have to fall as people use up all their savings. Any slump in the stock market could stem the flood of foreign money invested in US assets, causing the dollar to fall and sparking off higher inflation as import prices rise.
