EU: SUPPORT FOR CLOSER INTEGRATION

Article Abstract:

European leaders gave their backing on 20 June 2000 for moves to enable closer assimilation among certain European Union (EU) nations in a move which would effectively consign other members to a slow lane. The UK is wary of such moves but both Germany and France are backing plans regarded in some quarters as the start of a new tight band of nations with a major commitment to integration. Further details will emerge over the coming six months but the feeling is that the establishment of a new inner core may alter EU politics and place pressure on unenthusiastic integrationists.

Home-town heroes bring the politics closer

Article Abstract:

Voters in Texas are naturally concerned about the outcome of the presidential election in Nov 1996, but they are also aware that key developments will take place in local politics before that time. In Travis County, ballots are soon to be held for three Texas Supreme Court positions, three seats in the state legislature and three Court of Criminal Appeals places, while there will also be elections to positions including district attorney, sheriff and district judge. There has been particular interest in the contest for the position of US Senator.
