False claims for new foods outlawed

Article Abstract:

A code of practice has been devised by regulatory bodies, the food industry and consumer bodies covering the way functional foods are labelled in the UK. Guidelines revealed on 19 August 1998 are scheduled to receive official clearance in 14 days and are intended to deal with existing loopholes which may give food firms the opportunity to make false claims based on scientific research. Functional foods contain an ingredient said to be beneficial to health or general well-being and the guidelines are a response to fears that existing legislation will be insufficient to cope with a marked rise in number of claims expected to be made by manufacturers.

DTI to step in to save BA deal

Article Abstract:

British Airways is expected to be faced with a demand to give up 260 runway slots around London as the price of winning European Commission approval for their planned merger with American Airlines. This is a cut from the EU's origin demand that BA give up 350 slots and the slots to be relinquished must be done so free of charge. In the UK the Office of Fair Trading had recommended that just 168 slots need be given up by BA, and the airline now hopes that the UK authorities can bring pressure to ease the terms of the EU commissions demands.
