EUROPE: GROWTH IN MOBILE PORTAL MARKET

Article Abstract:

Europe's mobile portal market is projected to be worth Euro 22bn by 2005, increasing by 2010 to Euro 100bn, according to research by Merrill Lynch released on 22 June 2000. The portals of existing mobile phone operators will capture 50% of the market because of the ease in which they can offer services to current subscribers, with the remainder gleaned by niche operators and fixed-line phone firms. Merrill Lynch projects that in 2005 there will be 242mn wireless Internet users, compared with a mere 9mn in 2000, with a further increase in 2010 to 311mn users. Mobile portals are seen as beneficial in that they are more user-friendly than personal computers (PCs) as mobile phone users carry their equipment with them at all times.
