EU's new recruits move into Brussels

Article Abstract:

Poland is to open its embassy to the European Union in Brussels, Belgium, on Mar 31, 1998. The imposing building is symbolic of the fact that Poland, along with four other east European countries and Cyprus, are now within only a few years of officially joining the European Union. These countries are gradually beginning to realize that gaining European Union membership will be an extremely complex matter, as there are many regulations with which they have to comply. They will have to deal with many short-term problems in order to benefit from the long-term advantages of European Union membership.

Abiola's death tears Nigeria apart

Article Abstract:

There have been clashes between police and protesters in Lagos, Nigeria, following the death of political prisoner Moshood Abiola. Abdulsalam Abubakar, the country's leader, has been forced to dissolve the cabinet, although no changes have been made to the core of the ruling military junta. Many Nigerians believe that Abiola was murdered, although a human rights group has stated that it warned Nigeria's military regime about Abiola's poor state of health four weeks before he died.

Britain's four-letter welcome for the frightened

Article Abstract:

The UK government seems to be pursuing a policy of treating asylum-seekers very harshly, mainly with the aim of deterring others from seeking asylum in the UK. At Campsfield House detention centre in Oxfordshire, England, for example, there is very tight security. Asylum-seekers who are being detained there claim that they are being very badly treated by the security guards. Indeed, inmates who dare to question the regime are routinely transferred to an ordinary prison.
