Easter, Passover, Eid - suppose they were true

Article Abstract:

UK society continues to privilege those who believe in religion, even though only a very small majority of the population actually practice any form of religion. This is reflected in the fact that public holidays are still arranged around traditional holy days. If society as a whole does not believe in religion, then it is time to stop insisting that children receive religious education and national holidays should be arranged in some other way. However, it is also important to be aware that a belief system which does not have any consequences in the real world could be dangerous.

Imran Khan's baby boycott

Article Abstract:

The failure of Imran Khan to attend the recent birth of his son attracted considerable media criticism. Indeed, it is unusual nowadays for the father not to be present at the birth. The presence of the father seems to be welcomed by the mother and by medical staff, and is now almost taken for granted. However, there is no real evidence that it is actually necessary for the father to attend the birth, and it could be argued that the Khans are to be admired for making arrangements which suited them, rather than pandering to public opinion.

Roses round the door - and blood on the doorstep

Article Abstract:

Members of the clergy who work in run-down inner city areas in the UK are often totally unprepared for the challenges such work will bring. They frequently face violence, and expose themselves and their families to many dangers from people who are mentally disturbed, unhinged by drugs or completely desperate. Most clergy do not come from a background which prepares them for work of this kind.
