Take cover before the blitz

Article Abstract:

Mortgage insurance policies, which will meet mortgage interest payments if the mortgage-holder is made redundant or is unable to work because of illness or accident, have become increasingly popular since the UK government changed the rules on paying mortgage interest benefits. These policies have until recently been relatively expensive, but their cost is now gradually being reduced. In most cases, the policy will make a payment after the mortgage-holder has been out of work for 30 days.

Income and growth without losing your shirt

Article Abstract:

Distribution bonds are a popular savings product in the UK, and are now used by almost 200,000 people. They are a type of unit-linked savings scheme, usually with a conservative investment strategy. Funds are invested in a range of gilts, equities and other fixed-interest investments, and income attracts no capital gains or income tax. They are generally seen as a safe investment, although risk will vary according to the investment strategy used by the individual fund.

Stark choices on the road to conversion

Article Abstract:

The planned flotation of Woolwich Building Society will be successful, according to new chief executive John Stewart. It is quite willing to compete with other financial institutions, but would be open to a reasonable takeover offer. He has a reputation for being easy-going, but points out that he has strong business sense and that he has been responsible for starting up many companies.
