How to save the world without leaving your high street

Article Abstract:

Groups which campaign on a single political issue are increasingly looking to use consumer power to convey their message to politicians. The charity Christian Aid, for example, is putting pressure on UK supermarkets to improve the economic and social conditions of suppliers in developing countries, while the Co-operative Bank has cut off all links with the arms trade, especially with manufacturers of land-mines. Statistics indicate that there are currently 36 consumer boycotts in operation in the UK.

The anti-politician is back at centre stage

Article Abstract:

Ross Perot, who stood as a presidential candidate in 1992, has not yet announced whether he plans to do so again in 1996. This time, he must accept the decision of the Reform Party, which he founded in 1995 and which is completely financed by him. Most observers believe that he will be the party's presidential candidate, but there are mixed views on how he will perform and on how his presence may affect the contest between president Bill Clinton and Senator Robert Dole.

The memory of war

Article Abstract:

There are many British cemeteries in Flanders, Belgium, and Picardy, France, where the battles of the First World War took place. However, there is no fully developed British museum or information centre in the region. Visitors have no source of information about British and Commonwealth involvement in the First World War. It is now time to fill this gap, especially as the First World War is rapidly passing out of living memory.
