ECT shocks to the health system

Article Abstract:

Electroshock therapy (ECT) is administered to 20,000 people a year suffering from psychiatric disorders in the UK. Of these, around 2,000 receive ECT treatment without their consent, with the UK thus contravening a European Union ruling. Mental health user groups are now calling on the government to ensure that ECT can only be administered with the consent of the patient and a second opinion. Psychiatric nurses feel that ECT is being used too extensively and that alternative treatments, such as cognitive therapy, should be made more widely available.

Article Abstract:

It is becoming increasingly widely recognized that perfumes can cause allergic reactions, including rashes, headaches and asthma attacks. Synthesized solvents are now used in almost every personal care product available, and this means that these products are particularly at risk of causing Multiple Chemical Sensitivity disorder. In its most extreme form, this condition can lead to acute immunological and toxicological reactions.

Cold turkey can give you cold feet

Article Abstract:

It is vital to be fully prepared for an attempt to give up smoking, as nicotine is highly addictive, making withdrawal very hard. Methods such as hypnotherapy or acupuncture may be successful for some smokers, but books and helplines, which are much cheaper, are equally effective. It is important to be aware of when cravings are likely to arise and how long they will last, and that chest and nasal infections could be frequent.
