Eddie the irresistible

Article Abstract:

Comedian Eddie Izzard prefers to use a rolling style, with his act constantly changing. He avoids repeating himself, and remains fresh by developing a rapport with the audience. He has experienced great warmth from ordinary people, and this helped him to come out as a transvestite. He believes that his personality can help bridge the gap between him and mainstream society. He has avoided becoming too established as a television comedian, as he feels that this would hamper his ability to do other work.

Nothing to Hyde

Article Abstract:

Organised religion and organised politics are largely irrelevant, according to comedian Billy Connolly, who feels that he is becoming more anarchic as he gets older. He has offended many people with the amount of swearing in his stage performances, but is determined to stand firm in his beliefs. He has taken a rather different direction recently, appearing in a Screen One television play as Deacon Brodie, a well-known 18th century figure in Edinburgh, Scotland.

A wry smile from the rising sun

Article Abstract:

Japanese comedian Issey Ogata is keen to dispel the widely-held view in Japanese society that is wrong to laugh. His characters bear very few links with those seen in traditional Japanese theatre, and his style is seen as revolutionary. He has become extremely popular in Japan, and has a fan club of 56,000. He has a magnetic stage presence, and this means that his performances in the UK are likely to be successful, despite the language barrier.
