Elderly man waited 28 hours for a bed

Article Abstract:

Many people who visit accident and emergency departments at hospitals in the UK and are found to require in-patient treatment are having to wait a very long time for a bed on a ward, according to a survey by the Association of Community Health Councils. In one case, an 84-year-old man waited 28 hours in a cubicle in the accident and emergency department at City Hospital in Birmingham, England. National Health Service managers emphasize that the survey does not distinguish between patients who had to remain in casualty because of a shortage of beds and those with infectious conditions who could not be admitted to a ward.

How a minor dose of flu nearly felled the NHS

Article Abstract:

The UK National Health Service (NHS) has been put under great pressure by the current outbreak of flu, even though the government has emphasized that there is not a flu epidemic. This raises the question of how the NHS would cope if there really were a flu epidemic. There are a number of reasons why the NHS is in chaos. To a certain extent, it has become a victim of its own success, with bed occupancy rates rising as waiting lists are reduced and facilities therefore being placed under greater strain. It has become efficient in its use of funds, but has little capacity to deal with sudden rises in demand.
