Electoral reform: no longer a Tory taboo?

Article Abstract:

Paddy Ashdown says Conservatives will modify their voting system policy if they need to. Chris Patten's book advocates electoral reform, but that was before he became chairman of the Conservative Party. His current speeches do not explain his change of view but his loyalty to the Party takes priority. The 'Campaign Guide' refers to the disadvantages and advantages of proportional representation and describes the party view in the past tense.

Lesson number one for Blunkett

Article Abstract:

The Labour party has confirmed that it is considering plans to withdraw the charitable status of public schools, but it may not be able to do so once it is actually in power. It has failed to do so in the past, and the cabinet which would take power if it wins the next election will have little ministerial experience. This will make it very difficult to stand up to opposition to these plans from civil servants in Whitehall.

Budget does little to boost Tory ratings

Article Abstract:

The Independent combined results from eight polls sampling over 11,000 people. Labour had 41%, Conservatives 39% and Liberal Democrats 16%. This would result in a hung parliament. Labour would have 311 seats, Conservatives 303, Liberal Democrats 14 and others 23. MORI and NOP find that almost one in three voters may change their minds.
