Electronic smog - 'invisible assassin'

Article Abstract:

The London Underground rail company is attributing the slowness of its attempt to introduce a new computerised signalling system to the increase in "electronic smog". This smog is caused by electrical gadgets such as pagers and mobile phones which are seeing a continuing growth. As a result of this growth there has been a rise in the amount of electrical interference at stations which has in turn caused computers to shut down as a fail-safe precaution because communications between trains and track are confused. The problem initially arose from power cables on the Underground generating electromagnetic disturbances the added electrical surge is making matters worse. Electronic smog is also being held responsible for other interference including on aircraft and in hospitals. The Underground is to install shielding equipment to prevent further problems arising. The military uses a device known as the Faraday cage, helping prevent jamming and to protect control systems; the device is too expensive for civilian computers and will not be considered.

UK: DRIVER TRAINING ATTACKED AT GREAT WESTERN

Article Abstract:

Drivers employed by Great Western Trains continued to be inadequately trained to use the automatic train protection (ATP) system, even after the Southall crash in September 1997, according to evidence given at the public inquiry into the crash. The train operator also did not try to match up ATP-trained drivers with trains equipped with the system, which accounted for just 13% of all trains.
