End of the road for focus groups?

Article Abstract:

Focus groups have been extensively used as a marketing tool over recent decades. However, some observers are now expressing doubts about the effectiveness of focus groups, particularly in relation to politics. Politicians in the US are now beginning to reject focus groups. It is clear that focus groups may not necessarily yield the desired result, as participants may simply say what they feel the researchers want to hear, and the researchers may not ask the right questions.

Better muckraking than stonewalling

Article Abstract:

The US media treatment of George W Bush shows that the US media tends not to expose hypocrisy, as occurs in Britain. US reporters may pursue wrongdoing, but are unlikely to tell Bush that he should not evade questions on possible past substance abuse. US reporters focus on facts rather than rumor, and are less prepared than British reporters to seek evidence that rumors may be based on fact. Exposes from supermarket tabloids tend not to be reported in the serious press.

Meet the press, Mr President

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the likely treatment of the new administration of President-elect George W. Bush by the country's top liberal journalists are discussed. It is widely believed that the national media has a liberal stance, with little sympathy being shown for conservative opinions and politicians.
