Ethical funds: turning principles into practice

Article Abstract:

There are now more than 30 ethical unit and investment trusts available in the UK, and this market sector is expanding. These products use both positive and negative criteria to determine their investment strategies. They avoid companies involved in activities considered to be negative, such as gambling, and favour those involved in positive activities, such as supplying basic requirements like water. Those considering ethical investment should decide which issues they regard as most important, then seek a fund which best matches their values.

Virtue has its own reward

Article Abstract:

Ethically-based investment is becoming an increasingly popular concept among investors in the UK. Indeed, the value of individually-invested ethical funds has reached more than 2 billion pounds sterling. Ethical funds use negative and positive screens to determine their choice of investments, allowing investors to both avoid specific business areas and support others. They all hold a higher percentage of shares in small to medium-sized companies than non-ethical funds.

Green investments need time to flourish

Article Abstract:

There is now growing interest among UK investors in ethical investment funds which take into account considerations other than the company's profit levels. Investors are given choices about which areas to avoid, and can also direct their money towards companies which have advanced social policies. Investors now have the option to structure all areas of their financial affairs, including pensions, on the basis of their personal beliefs.
