Europe overbanked? Pull the other one

Article Abstract:

Barclays Chief Executive Martin Taylor is certainly right in claiming that Europe is overbanked. However, it is possible to challenge his interpretation of this situation. He believes that possible mergers between large banks should not be viewed in a narrow domestic context, but rather in a wider European context, especially against the background of the implementation of European Monetary Union. In fact, overbanking in Europe takes the form of established banks which regard takeovers as the only response to change. These banks must not be allowed to use their power to hamper the activities of new entrants.

Millennium bomb could trigger bank crisis

Article Abstract:

The year 2000 computer date change problem could have a very serious impact on the banking industry, even if banks believe that they have made the necessary amendments to their software. The entire interbank money transfer system could grind to a halt if only between 5% and 10% of daily payments were held up as a result of software problems relating to the year 2000 date change, for example, and a liquidity crisis could emerge. Problems could also arise for companies with payment systems connected to banks.

Banks press for speed-up in reforms

Article Abstract:

The Turkish banking sector is set to see significant challenges in 1998, including the repercussions of the Asian crisis and the slowdown in economic growth. Leading banks are calling on the government to speed up the economic and financial reform process. They are particularly keen to see faster reform of the social security system, which was putting great pressure on state funds. Banks will be negatively affected by falling inflation, as lending to the government will become less profitable.
