Exceptional crimes throw light on ordinary lives

Article Abstract:

It is vital to remain optimistic about the prospects for ensuring that young people in the UK do not move from petty crime towards much more serious criminal acts, such as the murder in Failsworth, Greater Manchester, England, of a 71-year-old woman by two 15-year-old girls. Care should be taken to avoid the view that nothing can prevent young people from deprived backgrounds embarking upon a life of crime. Efforts should be made to deflect attention from the exceptional crimes and to focus instead on what can be done to help the majority of young people who go wrong.
