Extending a helping hand across the great divide

Article Abstract:

The UK's National Mentoring Consortium aims to assist university students from ethnic minorities with gaining employment. In many cases, these students lack confidence about their abilities, even though they are often more highly qualified than their white counterparts, and may not know much about how to find employment. The scheme now covers 56 companies and 15 universities, and will have assisted 2,000 people by the end of 1997. It links ethnic minority graduates on a one-to-one basis with an employed mentor.

The pen is mightier than the needle

Article Abstract:

Writing has been the best therapy for heroin addiction, according to novelist Edward St Aubyn. He began observing everything very closely as a young child, and had already begun writing his first novel by the age of 12. He has written three autobiographical novels, and has also gained widespread acclaim for his most recent work, the non-autobiographical 'On The Edge.' In this work, he aimed to establish whether there is any convincing rationale behind the therapies and jargon that make up the New Age.

A survivor of the mean streets

Article Abstract:

Novelist Hubert Selby Jr. believes that he turned to writing at a low point in his life to ensure that he would not feel that he had wasted his whole life. He is disappointed that he cannot do more, but has for many years been restricted by poor health. His most recent work, 'The Willow Tree,' has come 20 years after his previous novel, 'Requiem for a Dream.' He has produced only four novels since he first came to public attention with 'Last Exit to Brooklyn.'
