Sir Alec Cairncross

Article Abstract:

Economist Alec Cairncross studied as a post-graduate at Trinity College, Cambridge, England. He became a lecturer in economics at Glasgow University, Scotland, in 1935, and in 1938 began to write a textbook based on his lectures. This was published in 1944 and ran to six editions. He moved to the Economic Section of the Cabinet Office in Jan 1940, and also spent time at the Board of Trade and the Ministry of Aircraft Production during the second world war. He became Director of the Economics division of the Organisation for European Economic Co-operation in 1950.

Sam Aaronovitch

Article Abstract:

Economist Samuel Aaronovitch was part of the significant contribution made by the UK's Jewish community to radical politics. He devoted his early adult life to the Communist movement, but in the 1960s created a successful career as an academic economist. He became head of the economics team at South Bank Polytechnic, and was a frequent contributor to the magazine Marxism Today. He was firmly committed to physical fitness, and ran half-marathons when he was almost 70 years old.

Professor Donald Denman

Article Abstract:

Land economist Donald Denman served with the Lands Office of the Air Ministry and with the Cumberland War Agricultural Executive Committee during the second world war. He was appointed to the Dept of Estate Management at Cambridge University, England, in 1946, and was involved in raising funds for research. He played a key role in the development of proposals for a Land Economy Tripos. He was elected the first Professor of Land Economy in 1968.
