The test Japan's leaders must pass

Article Abstract:

Japan's new Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi and Finance Minister Kichi Miyazawa face significant challenges. The country's economy is experiencing a serious recession, and there are no indications of any improvement. Household saving has risen significantly, and consumer and business confidence are at very low levels. Miyazawa has initially focused on banking reform, but it remains uncertain whether he will be prepared to force the leading banks to declare their true bad debts. There is a danger of rising frustration about the slow pace of economic reform.

Please, Sayle-san, lend your bank some money

Article Abstract:

Japan has suffered a deflationary spiral of varying intensity since 1990. A situation now seems to be emerging where the country's banking system can no longer withstand deflation. Japanese export industries have traditionally performed well, but exporting from a depressed economy with minimal imports has pushed up the value of the yen and restricted exports. The Japanese government is trying to overcome economic problems by both allowing speculation to burn itself out and using public money to support bad loans.
