FRANCE: ZERO POLLUTION TAXIS THAT RUN ON AIR

Article Abstract:

A city car has been designed to run on fresh air emitting only fresh air and no pollution. Guy Negre, a French car designer, believes his design is now ready to go into production. The power unit gets its motive energy from 300 litres of air compressed 300 times above atmospheric pressure. The car runs by releasing the supercompressed air into a piston chamber. Heated air from the outside is then added and the mixture is expelled. It can run for 120 miles in an urban environment and reach a top speed of 60mph. The "Taxi Zero Pollution" handles and drives like a normal car. The design has been licensed to a number of companies in different countries who will build the design.

Mini Marvel

Article Abstract:

The Mini car, which was launched in 1959, is often regarded as typically British. In fact, very few are now sold in the UK. The Mini is most popular in Japan, where sales are around 8,000 a year. The car's unique design, by Anglo-Greek engineer Alec Issigonis, initially attracted a mixed reaction, but it soon became clear that the Mini was very enjoyable to drive, offering extremely good roadholding and handling. Sales reached a peak in 1971, at 318,475. BMW is now planning to relaunch the Mini in a design adapted to the demands of the 21st century.

Journey ends at scrapyard for 80,000 Ambassadors

Article Abstract:

The New Delhi Hindustan Ambassador taxi is a vehicle likely to be affected by an Indian government ban on vehicles aged over 15-years-old. The ban is part of a drive to cut pollution, and will affect over 80,000 Ambassador taxis, noted for their endurance, and often used by drivers to sleep in as well as transport passengers. The taxis are strong and newer cars avoid collision with them for this reason. Almost all Harley-Davidson tricycles and 4,000 buses will also be affected by the ban.
