Facing up to middle class anxiety

Article Abstract:

It is certainly true that middle class employees are now just as likely to be made redundant as their working class counterparts. However, legislation to increase job security is not the way to deal with this problem. New-style employment contracts do not appear to offer the long-term security which existed in the past, but at least they are honest about specific terms and conditions. They give employers a level of flexibility which can also benefit employees. Trade unions should focus on playing an educational role, rather than on pushing for contracts which are not relevant to modern conditions.

It is hard to play by the rules when there are none left

Article Abstract:

Government ethics has become a very important issue in many countries over recent years. This problem is not to do with individuals, as there is no evidence that people are more corrupt nowadays than in the past. It is more to do with the fact that ordinary people are now asking new and individual things of government. The business of government has undergone dramatic changes, and it is in the area of ethics that tension between the old and new systems are most apparent.
