Fall from miracle to meltdown leaves Clinton facing the prospect of a new global divide

Article Abstract:

Economic uncertainties emerging in Asia could pose a considerable challenge to the US project for an American-style economic system in the Pacific. Members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation grouping are beginning to to seek their own unique identity, and this is raising doubts about regarding the Pacific Rim as a single economic and geographic unit. President Bill Clinton has found that not all Asian countries accept that International Monetary Fund-style reforms will resolve their difficulties. Some are even calling for a more flexible Asian solution.

Brigitte at war

Article Abstract:

The publication of the autobiography of Brigitte Bardot has caused considerable controversy. It reveals a number of negative aspects of her personality, destroying the image which many people, especially men in their 50s and 60s, still have of her. It has attracted particular controversy because of efforts by her second husband and her only child to have some parts taken out. These are claimed to violate their privacy because they show child rejection and an unharmonious marriage.

The great transatlantic divide

Article Abstract:

Coverage of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon by the US and UK media is compared. The UK newspapers generally showed a strong sense of loss and and shock, while the US newspapers chose to avoid overt emotion. This reflects the greater immediacy of UK newspapers compared with their more self-conscious US counterparts.
