Fat of the land store up trouble

Article Abstract:

The UK government's chief medical officer, Kenneth Calman, has found increased levels of obesity, a decrease in physical activity and an increase in smoking amongst the young in his latest report. This is putting the nation's future health under threat particularly in combination with continuing poverty and inequality. Death among men aged 15 to 44 rose from violence, drugs and Aids while all other age groups have seen sharp falls. Overall life expectancy has increased to 74.6 years for men and 79.7 years for women. For under 65s the rate of coronary heart disease fell 20% while lung and breast cancer fell 15%.

Ovaltine queen in a post-ceramic world

Article Abstract:

The faux-continental quality of the pottery designs of Clarice Cliff proved very popular with ordinary people when her works were launched in 1928. Her efforts to transmit the 'jazz style' of 1920s Paris, France, in order to brighten up pottery design were condemned by design theorists in the 1930s, but Colley Shorter, owner of pottery firm AJ Wilkinson, where she worked, recognized that her work appealed to ordinary people and encouraged her. Her work now appeals to a younger generation.

Article Abstract:

Two young British filmmakers discuss their experiences of pitching their work to representatives of US film companies. The strong climate of optimism in the US is compared with the cynicism prevalent in the UK, and reluctance of UK film companies to discuss future projects with them is detailed. The possibility of settling in Hollywood is considered, and comparisons are made between standards of filmmaking in the UK and the US.
