Fear is a wheel in our head

Article Abstract:

It is wrong to treat the emotions as if they are a single system, according to Joseph LeDoux, professor at the Centre for Neural Science at New York University. He believes that each of the basic emotions has its own system and pathways. Research undertaken on rats indicates that the amygdala has links to planning centres, action centres and the hormone system. He has identified a route from the auditory system direct to the amygdala. This indicates that a person can be frightened of something without actually knowing what it is.

Stress? That went out with the Eighties

Article Abstract:

Ms Shirley Reynolds of the Medical Research Council Psychology Unit at Sheffield University and lecturer in occupational psychology at Birkbeck College, London Dr Bob Briner doubt the evidence linking stress and health. They feel some studies were poorly organised and produced conflicting results. However, Professor of organisational psychology at Manchester University's Institute of Science and Technology Cary Cooper measured traces of hormones and chemicals in blood which show stress.

Revealed: the scientific basis for falling in love

Article Abstract:

Professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota David Lykken studied more than 900 pairs of identical twins and their marriage partners. As twins have the same genes and the same upbringing it might be expected that they would marry similar people. The study showed that partners of twins are not alike and 40% of twins do not like their twin's spouse. Neither do the spouses particularly like the other twin.
