Fear stalks settlers' promised land

Article Abstract:

Settlers in West Bank communities such as Kdumim are growing increasingly concerned about Israeli government plans to establish the beginnings of a Palestinian state nearby. They believe that the roles of the settlers and the Palestinians are being reversed, with the settlers beginning to feel that they are the ones under occupation. The Israeli government is keen to postpone a clash with the settlers while Palestinian autonomy is being established, and the settlers cannot therefore gain support by claiming that they have been abandoned by their own government.

Welcome to the promised land

Article Abstract:

The new independent Palestinian state which is currently being created is made up of a number of competing authorities. There are still Israeli troops in the West Bank and Gaza, along with 135,000 Israeli settlers. However, Palestinians now feel that they will finally see the end of the Israeli occupation. For Israelis, the assassination of Yitzak Rabin has greatly reduced the power of the nationalist right, and Shimon Peres has been able to give attention to reaching peace with Syria, even though this is not a popular move with ordinary people.

A thorn in the side of 'mafia' in Palestine

Article Abstract:

The decision by Ghassan Shaka, mayor of the West Bank town of Nablus, to double the price of water and electricity for poor refugees living in the Balata camp was motived by greed, according to Husam Khader, a political militant and member of the Palestinian Legislative Council. He regards the officials of the Palestinian Authority as corrupt, and has organized a successful strike against them. He is one of only a few Palestinian politicians prepared to make a stand against corruption in the Palestinian Authority.
