Major must seize the moment, or die

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major is under considerable pressure to rule out a single European currency in the next Parliament, or at least in its first phase. He has so far stated that deciding on this issue before the next general election would mean losing the opportunity to influence the negotiations regarding monetary union. However, his opponents believe that this argument is irrelevant, as there is now little left to influence. Furthermore, pro-European forces within the Conservative party are also beginning to become more assertive, and are arguing that a single currency should not be ruled out.

Decoding Major's hidden agenda

Article Abstract:

Many observers feel that UK prime minister John Major has not really settled fully into his role, even though he has now been prime minister for six years. However, it is possible that he may begin to change if the Conservative party wins the next general election. He may start to fulfill his aspirations, and may start to tackle wider issues such as the role of government. If this does happen, then the new right will probably be eliminated altogether.

Reshuffle likely in aftermath of victory for Major

Article Abstract:

Prime minister John Major will almost certainly reshuffle the cabinet if he survives the forthcoming election for the leadership of the Conservative party. He will want to ensure maximum support by removing any elements which may be opposed to him. However, some observers believe that a reshuffle would only have a positive impact in the short term, with its effects soon wearing off.
