Major sets out his credentials

Article Abstract:

UK Prime Minister John Major says that he and his government are bringing about many radical changes that are going unseen at present due to other distracting factors. The squabbling over the Maastricht bill has overshadowed other bills going through parliament and other changes in attitudes such as those towards the church, the monarchy and parliament. The reduction of inflation and interest rates have made the UK more competitive than he has even known. He feels the blaming of unemployment for the surge in crime is unjustified and that the UK is emerging from the recession as the rest of Europe and Japan encounter harsher economic conditions.

John Major: watch me, then judge me

Article Abstract:

UK prime minister John Major is giving a great deal of attention to plans for making extensive changes in the way Scotland and Wales are governed. He is determined to prevent the Scottish Nationalists from winning a majority in a Scottish parliament, and wants to show that the Labour and Liberal Democrat home rule plans are inappropriate. He emphasises that the Conservative party is undertaking serious long-term planning, and believes that this will be reflected in the outcome of the next generale election.

How Labour could hand victory to Major

Article Abstract:

Some observers believe that the Labour party is now becoming too self-confident, with its prominent figures having become convinced that the Conservatives are too widely disliked to stand a chance of winning the next general election. They overlook the fact that John Major is an extremely determined person who is prepared to take many risks. The Conservative party is also more united than it has been for some time.
