Keating pledges referendum on the monarchy

Article Abstract:

Australia's head of state should be chosen from among true Australians, according to prime minister Paul Keating. He has stated that a plebiscite will be held within a year on replacing the Queen with an Australian head of state if his Labor government is re-elected at the forthcoming general election. A vote in favour of having an Australian as head of state would prompt a constitutional amendment to be put at a later referendum. The republican issue has become increasingly important as the Labor party slips behind the conservative Liberal-National coalition in the opinion polls.

Monarchy will be but a memory

Article Abstract:

Paul Keating won the Australian general election and promised to hold a referendum giving Australians the choice of becoming a republic. Opinion polls show a majority in favour. The year 2001, the date set for change, is the centenary of Australia's self-governing colonies joining in a federation. The British monarchy is considered irrelevant to the multicultural society which has evolved. A national identity and international trade would improve in a republic. The Australian Republican Movement (ARM) was formed in 1991.

Australia set for election cliffhanger

Article Abstract:

It remains uncertain whether Australian Prime Minister John Howard, who heads the conservative Liberal-National coalition, will gain a second term. It seems likely that he will only do so unless he benefits from the distribution of second votes from small parties and independent candidates. Australia's political landscape has been significantly altered by the emergence of Pauline Hanson's One Nation party, which is putting up 162 candidates in the election for the 148 seats in the House of Representatives.
