Keeping flags off the M5 map

Article Abstract:

The M5 Group was originally established in 1977 when it was rare to pool firms. In 1990 the Norton Rose M5 Group was formed to provide better practice management. It comprises seven firms with 311 partners, 1,350 fee earners and 3,000 staff in all. International work is more feasible with these numbers. Each member firm has access to all group resources, including specialist practice. Collective training, informal support and information exchange are beneficial.

A time to change - or die

Article Abstract:

Chairman of corporate finance at Coopers & Lybrand, Brian Woods-Scawen, believes lawyers should ensure their clients, market, people and profitability are correct to succeed beyond 1999. Innovation attracts young recruits. Clients are more aware of the services they seek. Specialisation and international connections are important. Legal firms should manage the client relationship through better co-ordination of services and exceed expectations.

You too could get to wear a wig like this

Article Abstract:

The legal profession still retains certain elements of the past, when only those who were wealthy and had good connections could afford to become a lawyer. Law firms still sometimes recruit people from a particular background, and barristers sometimes take freinds or relatives as private pupils. Proposals to reform the Bar Council's pupilage system are now being considered.
