Fed's rate cut fails to halt worst fall on Wall Street since crash of 1987

Article Abstract:

The New York Stock Exchange dropped sharply on the first day of trading following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon. A half-point cut in interest rates and a further cut to euro rates during early trading failed to reverse this trend. There were particularly large losses in the aviation sector.

Shares rally strongly, but how long can it last?

Article Abstract:

Mixed views are being expressed about the rally that has taken place in the FTSE 100 index since it hit a four-year low on Sep 21, 2001. Some observers believe that the factors required for a sustained recovery are in place, while others are more cautious, pointing out that the rally is fairly narrowly centred on large-cap stocks.

Be afraid. The bears haven't gone away, they're just hiding

Article Abstract:

A much larger proportion of Americans are invested in the stock market than is the case in any other country. This means that, when the stock market rises, consumers gain confidence and borrow and spend more. Rising activity has a positive impact on investor sentiment. However, if Wall Street slumps and remains at low levels, then consumers in the US will rapidly cut their spending and a serious recession will emerge in the US. This will have international consequences. Another matter of concern is that deflation could return for the first time since the 1930s.
