Feeding frenzy

Article Abstract:

There is strong demand for new restaurants in the UK as more and more people come to prefer eating in restaurants to preparing their own meals at home. The restaurant trade is currently worth 23 billion pounds sterling, and its value is forecast to rise by 24% over the period to 2002. Close links have been forged between bars and restaurants, and eating in restaurants has become a much more informal, less intimidating experience. There has been a particular growth in eating in restaurants among ordinary middle class people.

The mother of all bhajis

Article Abstract:

Actress and cookery writer Madhur Jaffrey feels that the popularity of chicken tikka masala in the UK is India's revenge for many years of colonization by the British. She is very precise about her cooking, and rejects the terms curry, tandoori and balti. She sometimes presents herself as an actress who cooks, but is also very committed to her cooking. She feels that cooking is a way of returning to her roots in India.
