Fewer forms and greater thought

Article Abstract:

The 1993 milk round is functioning well, although there may be less recruiters than usual. Employers are reducing management posts usually taken by graduates, but are recruiting graduates into posts not previously requiring a degree. Four in every five graduates are predicted to be employed by the end of 1993. Some employers feel they are not attracting high-quality graduates, so have limited the institutions they target. Students need to present professional applications, carefully targetted.

It pays to keep those career doors open

Article Abstract:

Vocational and non-vocational subjects can be studied to degree level in Britain but on the continent jobs are only open to those who have studied the relevant discipline. The Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services find that 44% of vacancies are offered to graduates in any subject, although professions such as medicine are rather more restricted. British employers incur higher training costs than other European companies but they recruit younger staff and pay lower salaries.

A legal career outside the law

Article Abstract:

Half of recently qualified law graduates enter professional training and the other half choose public service as tax inspectors, Customs and Excise officers, and local government officers, or industry and banking, but mostly accountancy. Where a degree in any subject is required for employment a law degree is deemed more rigorous, so is more acceptable. International opportunities are increasing with the EC permitting practice in different member states without requalifying.
