The serial murderer who had no motive, save the desire to play God

Article Abstract:

Harold Shipman, a GP from Hyde, Greater Manchester, England, has been found guilty of murdering 15 of his elderly female patients. Police have revealed that he may have carried out a total of 95 murders, and it is expected that he will be charged with a further 23 soon. He did not appear to have a motive for the murders, apart from a desire to control his patients' destiny. Secretary of State for Health Alan Milburn is set to announce an inquiry into this case.

Authority urges tightening of system that allowed killings

Article Abstract:

West Pennine Health Authority has responded to the case of GP Harold Shipman, who has been convicted of murdering 15 elderly female patients, by recommending that the General Medical Council should automatically inform every health authority about GPs who have been found to have illegally stocked drugs, as Shipman had. This is one of several recommendations intended to increase the accountability of GPs, particularly sole practitioners. The authority claims that it was not made aware of Shipman's offence.
