Film - the final crisis

Article Abstract:

Films face an uncertain future as the 21st century approaches. At the beginning of the 20th century, films offered energy and excitement, and it was not until the 1920s that going to see a film became an everyday activity. The emergence of the US film industry made film into an extremely conservative force. As the 21st century approaches, film has been reduced to a more personal level, with individuals exerting a significant degree of control over what they watch. Films are once again merely fragments and visual sensations.

The troubled emperor

Article Abstract:

Filmmaker George Lucas is set to gain a very high public profile through his new film, 'Star Wars, Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace.' This film is being accompanied by extensive marketing work, and is set to bring in revenue of around $4 billion before the end of 1999. This will significantly benefit Lucasfilm, the company of which Lucas is the head and sold shareholder. Lucas has not directed any films since 'Star Wars' in 1977, focusing instead on the 'Star Wars' franchise and the 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' franchise.

One step beyond: 1969, earth's giant leap year

Article Abstract:

It is possible to regard the landing of men on the Moon in 1969 as revealing more about humankind than about space. The Moon landing fulfilled humanity's escapist tendencies, but also allowed people to realize that the true subject of the mission was humankind and Earth. Going to the Moon gave a new insight into humankind and indicated that the Earth is a special place compared with the Moon, with its vast, bleak, empty spaces.
