Dangerous lure of the wild

Article Abstract:

Travellers who have chosen to avoid conventional tourist destinations and gain an insight into the way in which the people and the animals of the country they are visiting really live have always faced danger. The Foreign Office has been criticized for not issuing a warning about the dangers of travelling in Uganda in the light of the recent attack on tourists there, but those who travel to countries such as Uganda are courageous and intelligent, well aware of the risks they face. It is impossible to avoid all dangers, and we should not strive to do so.

Let the dragon roar again

Article Abstract:

The forthcoming elections to the Welsh Assembly can be seen as having great historical significance. The Welsh now have the opportunity to establish democratic self-government, and this has the potential to improve relations with the English. It is to be hoped that the Welsh find greater happiness in self-government, especially in smoothing over the long-standing divisions between the Welsh-speaking minority and the English-speaking majority, between long-standing inhabitants and newcomers and between the north and the south.

Tourism is destructive, in anybody's language

Article Abstract:

Mass tourism is extremely negative. It encourages pretence and fake traditionalism, and does not create anything positive. It cheapens history and works of art and architecture, and largely ignores local culture and traditions. It contributes little to local economies, and encourages selfishness and greed. However, there are some cases in which satisfying the needs of tourists can bring benefits for local people.
