Serbs drive 30,000 from homes

Article Abstract:

Almost 200,000 civilians have been displaced since fighting broke out between the Serb army and the secessionist Kosovo Liberation Army in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, in Feb 1998. Many ethnic Albanians have fled from their villages into the woods, and it has not been possible to get any aid to them yet. Some observers believe that a humanitarian crisis will emerge shortly in Kosovo if refugees are unable to return to their homes. Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic promised that the fierce offensive launched in Jul 1998 had come to an end, but Serb forces are now undertaking a new drive.

Nato extends deadline as killings go on

Article Abstract:

Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic has agreed to allow 2,000 unarmed soldiers into Kosovo, Yugoslavia, but there are still many Serb police and soldiers in the province and the situation there remains tense. Many ethnic Albanians in Kosovo have serious reservations about whether monitors to be sent by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe will be really effective in protecting them from the Serb forces and allowing them to return to their homes.

The battered, twisted and smoking ruins of a land raped and abused

Article Abstract:

Many ethnic Albanians are now beginning to return to their homes in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. They are extremely happy to be able to return, even though in many cases their homes have been badly damaged. Serbs who are now fleeing Kosovo are collecting together all their possessions and setting fire to their own homes. There is still a very tense atmosphere in Pristina, where extensive damage has been caused both by the Serbs and Nato.
