First blood to the US trust-buster

Article Abstract:

Joel Klein, head of the anti-trust division of the US Dept of Justice, is regarded by some fellow lawyers as being highly political. They feel that he is strongly aware that reducing Microsoft's domination of the Internet browser market will boost his own status and that of his department. However, he is also highly respected for his assiduity and intelligence. He has shown interest in modernizing anti-trust laws that were intended for use in traditional industries. This would have a significant impact on the World Wide Web and software used to access it.

Microsoft topples GE as king of the market

Article Abstract:

Microsoft was valued at $261.2 billion at the close of trading on Sep 17, 1998, compared with General Electric's $257.4 billion. The fact that Microsoft has overtaken General Electric as the most valuable company in the US is very symbolic, with a company closely associated with cutting-edge technology replacing one closely linked with the old economy. General Electric is regarded by ordinary people as an industrial manufacturer, while Microsoft is a symbol of the way in which technology is now driving US economic growth.
