Article Abstract:

There has been a significant growth in interest in the music of composer Harry Partch, who died in 1974. Indeed, his works have become a talisman for many artists, and instrument-makers, amateur musicians and microtonalists have become attracted to his desire for a return to 'just' intonation. One of Partch's main attractions is the beauty of his original instruments, which closely resemble sculptures. He desperately sought acceptance, but was inevitably alienated because his music could only be played on the instruments he had made.

She came from outer space

Article Abstract:

There is great pressure in modern life to always be totally up to date with latest technology, according to performance artist Laurie Anderson. At one stage, she included a great deal of technology in her shows, but has now rebelled against this trend and is taking a simpler approach. She is responsible for directing the Meltdown concert at the South Bank in London, England, which will run for two weeks from Jun 21, 1997. Performers will include Lou Reed, Robert Wilson and Brian Eno.

Junior Delgado: a millennial dread

Article Abstract:

Reggae singer Junior Delgado drew his inspiration for his song 'Sons of Slaves,' recorded for Lee 'Scratch' Perry in 1974 and reprised on his new album 'Fearless,' from what he knew of the history of slavery. He was extremely surprised by the power of the completed song. He has great respect for Perry, with whom he worked when he was embarking on his reggae music career. He plans to launch a second album in 1999, produced by On-U Sound's Adrian Sherwood.
