How the MoD came to rewrite our foreign policy

Article Abstract:

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) is reasonably satisfied with the government's Strategic Defence Review (SDR), which has served several useful purposes and has not taken away a significant proportion of the MoD's funding. The SDR has made it possible to identify rationalizations, to make the MoD more like a large company and to boost civilian control over the military. The MoD will therefore come under less pressure from the Treasury. The SDR has also given the MoD the impetus to address sensitive issues such as large cutbacks in the Territorial Army.

Do we need a Millennium festival?

Article Abstract:

There has been considerable controversy surrounding the UK government's plans for a festival to mark the Millennium in Greenwich, London, England. The government is determined that this must be a profitable commercial venture, and has stated that the festival will not go ahead unless funding from private enterprise matches that promised from the National Lottery. It seems strange that political dogma is being allowed to cloud what should be a joyful national event.

How do you rewrite a sonnet?

Article Abstract:

Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, England, designed by Sir John Soane and completed in 1814, has become too small for its constantly expanding collection of important works. There are now plans to add an extension which will take the form of a glazed garden cloister fronting the original entrance. The original building will not be changed in any way, while the extension will house facilities including a cafe, schoolroom, lecture theatre and storerooms.
