Firsts among equals? Not really

Article Abstract:

In the UK degrees are considered equal in value wherever they are obtained; this is not so in other countries. The US publishes tables rating colleges and universities based on qualifications required for intake. The more difficult the entry requirements, the higher the value of the degree. External examination in Britain is supposed to ensure equal levels. The increase in the number of students and the choice of nearly 100 universities since the abolition of the binary divide brings more diversity in quality.

A student writes: universities are safe

Article Abstract:

United Kingdom parents may be concerned for the safety of their children when they become students, but universities provide safe conditions. There are counselling and other support services and pastoral tutors are assigned to all students at Cambridge University. Academic work may be demanding, but students tend to enjoy the challenge, and they can seek help if they have problems. Students learn new skills such as money management. They are also able to help each other when problems arise.

Life's like this when you're a new student

Article Abstract:

New students are likely to feel nervous but the lengthy process of enrolment itself is a way to meet other students. Freshers Week is a time when events are organized and it is easy to meet people, and students who live in a hall of residence can benefit from being surrounded by a large number of other students. Universities seek to make life easier for new students, who should have enough confidence to develop friendships and encounter new people.
