For sale, apply to Westminster: London no longer belongs to its citizens

Article Abstract:

London's infrastructure has been privatised, the Greater London Council (GLC) abolished and the city is run as a place of work rather than enjoyment. The Labour party adopted Sir Richard Rogers and Mark Fisher's 'A New London' as part of their electoral campaign. It explains that Europe is creating a city civilisation rather than a national one. German state capital cities vie with one another for the best public transport, opera and schools. In Paris, Milan and Frankfurt, businesses work with civic investment for coordinated, dynamic cities.

London's balance of trade with Japan

Article Abstract:

Sogo, an old Japanese department store with 36 stores, opened a new store on Piccadilly Circus, London, to attract Japanese tourists with little time to shop, offering typically British goods. McColl designed the two-storey shop, which can accommodate three coaches at the back, to suit Japanese needs. Less traditional are Muji, the 'No Name Brand' shops in Carnaby Street and Covent Garden, which suit the younger customer, Japanese and British. They sell basic, timeless goods in contrast to Sogo's more elaborate style.

Manifesto for a greater London

Article Abstract:

The Labour document, 'A New London,' written by Sir Richard Rogers and Mark Fisher, describes London's problems and practical solutions. City administration is needed to coordinate services, establish priorities and take a long term view of investments. A symbolic development would be a linear park alongside the Thames. They propose increased use of the Thames, new parks, improved public squares, better public transport and pedestrian and cycle links between areas cut off from one another.
