Ecstasy and Leah Betts: the bouncer's tale

Article Abstract:

The case of Leah Betts, who died after taking ecstasy at her 18th birthday party, has come to public attention again following the publication of 'So This is Ecstasy?,' a book telling the story of Bernard O'Mahoney. He was the doorman at the nightclub where the ecstasy tablet which killed Leah Betts was purchased. He also claims to have been a member of the gang which controlled drug sales at the club. His book is disturbing because it tells of the darker side of dealing in ecstasy, which generally has a positive image.

Campaigning to be elected for a parliamentary seat where there is strong opposition can be extremely hard work, according to Lady Olga Maitland, who was very involved in her father's efforts to become Conservative MP for Caithness and Sutherland in 1964. She even went as far as to stick up campaign posters after dark, but her father was not elected. She believes that this is partly why she decided to go into politics, becoming MP for Sutton and Cheam.
