Forget the CBI, watch the market signals

Article Abstract:

The business world in the UK has become increasingly fragmented over recent years, and this is making it almost impossible to create a mechanism to represent the interests of business to government. This has been reflected recently in splits within the Confederation of British Industry about whether the UK should participate in European Monetary Union. Large companies are becoming less influential as they shed employees, while most job creation is taking place among small companies. It is now time for the government to watch the actions of business people very closely.

Forget about inflation - price stability is here to stay

Article Abstract:

A shift is currently taking place from inflation to price stability. This shift is occurring as a result of a combination of the power of savers and the power of globalization. The process is also being reinforced by structural developments in the world economic system, particularly the increased independence of central banks and pressure on governments to produce balanced budgets. Power has moved from politicians to central bankers, but the latter are only the intermediaries for a much deeper trend.
