France haunted by colonial nightmare

Article Abstract:

Pieds noirs, who went to France when Algeria declared independence on Jul 3 1962, held a reunion near Paris with a few Harkis, where they expressed concern about recent events in Algeria. Its population has increased fivefold to 25,00,000 inhabitants and Islamic fundamentalists were winning the first democratic elections until the Algerian leader, Mohamed Boudiaf, was assassinated in Jul 1992. 'Boat people' have been arriving in France to avoid Islamic rule and middle class, professional Algerians are emigrating.

Farmers blame their leaders for 'betrayal.' (problems of French agriculture)

Article Abstract:

The French farmers' union Rural Co-ordination has a government document called the 10th Plan which describes reforms intended to reduce surplus production. It states that leaders of the traditional farmers' union FNSEA agreed to the reforms but they deny this. Farmers feel cheated as the union previously told them the original Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was the only suitable policy. The CAP reform should not have been agreed before the Gatt negotiations were finalised.
