Frank Cutler

Article Abstract:

Bookseller and publisher Frank Cutler began his working life in Bowes & Bowes, a bookshop in Cambridge, England, where he was in the foreign book department. He began to study for an external degree of London University, but abandoned his studies when he formed the International Book Club with Geoffrey Grant in 1936. He served in the Middlesex Regiment during the second world war, returning to the International Book Club in 1946. This business gradually evolved from a lending library into a bookshop, changing its name to Grant & Cutler.

Christina Foyle

Article Abstract:

Bookseller Christina Foyle began holding literary luncheons in 1930 at the age of only 19. These events made her a public figure. They provided valuable financial support to Foyle's bookshop during the 1930s. Under her guidance, Foyle's developed a lecture agency, an art gallery, book clubs and publishing. She was not a caring employer, but the business managed to flourish. She enjoyed travelling to South Africa, where Foyle's had branches, and also to the US.

J.L. Gili

Article Abstract:

Bookseller, publisher, Spanish scholar and translator Joan Lluis Gili i Serra, known as John Louis Gili, received private tuition in Latin from Canon Josep Llovera, whom he later helped with a Catalan translation of St Augustine's 'Confessions.' He was trained for a career in publishing, and settled permanently in London, England, in Oct 1934. He became sole owner of a specialized small press and bookshop in 1935, and began to publish in 1936.
