Earning less can make you better off

Article Abstract:

Pensioners may not need to generate additional income from their investments if their pension income is relatively high. However, it is important to ensure that some funds are instantly available in the case of an emergency. Excess funds from an account with relatively quick access can be transferred into an investment with potential for capital growth. It may be worth considering a guaranteed capital fund, which has the option of guaranteeing the return of between 95% and 100% of capital but also gives the opportunity to invest in the market for capital appreciation.

A better bet than bricks and mortar

Article Abstract:

A retired person who wishes to secure a reliable income should not really consider purchasing properties for letting purposes, as this can bring considerable initial and ongoing expenses. It is important to set aside a cash reserve for emergencies, and attention must also be given to providing for the costs of any future long-term care. Any investments must be carefully managed to ensure that the individual's age allowance is not negatively affected. Possible investments include Canada Life's Mercury Balanced Investment Fund.

Acting for the future

Article Abstract:

Those concerned with investing for the future should consider tax-efficient savings and investments. Medium-term savings can be placed in a Tax Exempt Special Savings Account. When this account matures in five years' time, the amount deposited can be rolled into an Individual Savings Account without affecting the annual allowance. A Personal Equity Plan is a good option for medium-to-long term investing. An equity-based investment should be regarded as part of a longer-term strategy.
