Adult videos have become an acceptable part of US society. They are now available through local video stores, which are keen to stock them because they are more profitable than non-pornographic videos. The number of rentals of adult videos from general video stores exceeded 600 million in 1997. Pornography has traditionally been seen as violent, sexist and threatening to female emancipation. However, latest research indicates that there are no proven links between pornography and anti-social behaviour.

Film stars have come to resemble fashion models, and this has led to a certain amount of predictability, especially as many actresses now use stylists. Aspiring actresses are now strongly aware that they cannot afford to ignore fashion trends, especially as choosing a particularly notable item of clothing can attract extensive media attention.
