From musical magic to movie mayhem

Article Abstract:

Musical films often contain elements of violence which seem to be there merely to attract audiences. It is very rare for a musical film to contain toughness without descending into violence and tenderness without descending into sentimentality. Robert Altman's new film 'Kansas City,' for example, is excellent but loses credibility through a scene of considerable violence, while 'Evita' has attractive music and good performances by the actors but its characters are not particularly likeable. The best musical film is 'The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,' made by Jacques Demy in 1964.

They get debauchery, we get pancakes

Article Abstract:

Carnivals are not really an integral part of society in the UK, but some carnival events still take place in certain parts of the country. The traditional Shrovetide Fair still takes place every year in Lichfield, England, for example, while the annual Great Spitalfields Pancake Race is held by Alternative Arts in London, England. Carnival events were traditionally followed by a period of fasting, and this is something that most people in modern society cannot understand.

Cornelia, you have a cheating art

Article Abstract:

The Serpentine Gallery in London, England, is currently staging an exhibition of the work of installation artist Cornelia Parker. Her pieces create a certain sense of unease, but are also charming. Some of her works seem to be too contrived, but others have a very strong message. Parker is very keen to make existing, found, objects interesting. Details are also given of work by John Stathatos at Wigmore Fine Art in London, England.
